Kathleen S. Bartl -- Clay | ARTIST’S STATEMENT: I am no longer bound by nature's rules. Not having to copy what has already been created in nature is a gift that I have been given, and I cherish it. It is exciting and freeing to see an ear get pulled out too long or a nose pushed in uncharacteristically. I love to see how the animal is feeling and I get such joy when someone comes up to me and tells me they just feel something when they see my animals. There is nothing better than hearing those words. I’ve come to love whimsy! BIO: Kathleen comes from a family of artists. She initially created pen and ink drawings of animals, yet her work never met her expectations of perfection, despite great effort and dedication. A sudden life-altering accident in her late forties changed everything — she could no longer do what she was used to doing. She tried on different mediums but they never fit, until she took a clay hand-building class. Then Covid hit, and the isolation encouraged her to teach herself how to play with clay via videos and books. During those two years, she developed her own own quirky and whimsical style in creating her loveable and very appealing clay animal sculptures. She is a member of Sac Fine Arts, Placerville Arts Center, Blue Line Art Gallery and Art League of Lincoln. Her creations have placed in many shows, and she placed in the Sac Fine Arts in Summer 2022 with the sculpture (shown below), “Animal House.” |
